Frequently Asked Questions
What is The Columbarium?
The Columbarium is a place for final committal of cremated remains (cremains)
in dignified and consecrated grounds. It provides individual "niches" with a
permanent memorial face plate identifying the loved one.
What if we already have a family plot? Why would I want this as
well?
We respect that many people have traditions and family plots that may be close
to relatives and home. The Columbarium provides one more unique option for a
family to provide a permanent memorial. It may never be utilized for a loved
ones cremains, but your memorial will always be on the grounds of St. John's
Northwestern Military Academy, and forever be a part of its long standing
history and traditions. The niche can remain empty, or a loved ones personal
memento or picture can be placed inside.
What can I expect when I reserve a niche for myself or a loved
one?
When a right of interment is purchased the individuals name and year of birth
is permanently affixed to the niche faceplate. If the loved one is deceased,
the year of death will also be added at this time. At the time of death (or at
a predetermined date if the loved one is deceased) a dignified and respectful
memorial service will take place to honor the loved one. This service can
include many different options that will be discussed with the family. The
Cadet Corps, taps, religious leader and a formal committal service are all
options that the family can decide upon and determine what they feel is
appropriate.
Are there any financial benefits in reserving my niche
now?
Yes, there are. 60% of the purchase price for the right of interment is a tax
deductible donation to the Academy Foundation. You can earn that tax benefit
AND feel comfortable knowing that your final arrangements have been taken care
of in advance.
We are uncomfortable thinking about this. Why should we take care
of this in advance?
If you feel uncomfortable taking care of your final arrangements, think for a
moment how your loved ones will handle this with all of the added pressures of
having lost someone close to them the day before. Do you really want to put
them through this on what could be the most difficult and stressful days of
their lives?
How much is the cost of reserving our space in The Columbarium?
Depending upon the location of the niche within The Columbarium, the total
price ranges from $2300 to $5500. These prices include the tax deductible
portion to the foundation, the purchase of the right of interment, the
perpetual care fund and the memorial service (if any) of your choosing. The
final price can be paid in full or by installments to the Academy. More
detailed information is in our pricing page.
